Don Bosco Family has provided 50,000 Euros for the construction of boreholes, water tanks and repairs of toilets at the central Pademba Road prison in Freetown.
Director of Don Bosco Family, Lother Wagner, told a press conference that they had been partnering with the prison authorities to ensure the provision of basic amenities for inmates.
He said his organisation had already signed a memorandum of understanding with the authorities and were working hard to ensure they transformed the prison into a correctional centre where prisoners would come out as changed persons.
“We have succeeded in providing counselling sessions, food and water, and medical assistance to inmates”, he said.
Wagner assured that the water facility would be guaranteed for about 10 years and that they would be charged with the responsibility of repairing the well if any problems occurred.
Director of Prison, Sanpha Kamara thanked Don Bosco saying that before now the facility was adequate to cater for all inmates, especially in the areas of pipe borne water, but that the increase in the number residential houses around the facility "has led to us now suffering to get adequate pipe born water”.
Engineer of the project, Enrico Walter of Brunnenbau Conrad Ltd. explained that the borehole they would construct would not be the normal ones built across the country that would dry up. “This borehole will last many decades, and will always flow for inmates to use”, he said.
He said it would provide about 60,000 litres of water per day hence enabling all inmates to use about 50 litres of water per day as they wished. He assured that in the next four weeks the water well project would have been completed.
