Lesbian couple to be banished from community in southern Sierra Leone

Community stakeholders in Moriba Town, Southern Sierra Leone are set to banish a lesbian couple from the community following a matrimonial engagement ceremony that reportedly followed a birthday celebration for one of the partners last week.

The recommendation which is the outcome of a stakeholders meeting held on the said issue is to be approved by the regent chief of the community next Friday.

Sierra Leone civil servants want wages commission to start operations, as Chairman Timbo calls for patience

As Civil servants eagerly await the Wages and Compensation Commission (WCC) to fully commence its operations, Chairman Alpha Osman Timbo has called on the public to exercise patience, saying they are working round the clock to ensure they fulfil the Commission’s mandate.

President Julius Maada Bio pronounced the Wages and Compensation Commission in Parliament in 2023 and appointed Chairman Timbo, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David W.S Banya and the Deputy CEO, Prince Bio to run the affairs of the Commission.

13-year-old girl shot with local gun in Sierra Leone

A 13-year old girl, Satta Kawa was allegedly shot with  a locally made gun on the 18th June, 2024 at Ngegbema in Tunkia Chiefdom, Kenema district by a 14 -year -old boy Alie Thaohid Kamara.

According to police media officer in Kenema, Inspector Prince Bernad Jayboi Kamara, the mother of the victim Jenneh Sillah reported the matter to the police at Ngebema that her daughter was shot in the upper left shoulder. The police immediately rushed to the crime scene and referred the matter to Kenema for medical attention.

Climate Finance Unit validates Sierra Leone's carbon market policy

As part of government’s preparedness for a carbon market investment, the Climate Finance Unit under the Ministry of Finance has ended a one day validation of carbon market policy framework in the Eastern region.

During the one day validation process in Kenema on the 28th June, 2024, the head of the Unit, Sellu McCarthy said they are touring the regional headquarter towns in order to engage the relevant stakeholders that have bearing on forestry.

Deputy Speaker blames ministry staff over land dispute

The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Ibrahim Tawa Conteh has highlighted increased in land disputes in the Western Area of Sierra Leone, saying that most of such cases are ignited by staff at the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Country Planning.

New digital payment platform launched

As part of efforts to ensure digital financing system, Metro Cable Sierra Leone Limited last Friday 28th of July 2024 introduced a new digital payment platform dubbed Vult.

The platform which is not a bank but operates through local and international banks using Master Card, according to officials, enables user’s access to digital platform for online transaction, money transfer, payment of bills among others.
