Baby, 11 months, “poisoned” in Sierra Leone

By Newman Anthony Levey in Bo

Police in Bo have arrested a couple in connection with the suspected poisoning of an 11-month-old baby boy which led to his near death.

Mohamed Kemoh, the boy’s father and Francess Koroma, his stepmother, were detained after the baby fell ill last week and was rushed to the hospital where doctors said they suspected his food had been poisoned.

According to the Regional Spokesman of the Sierra Leone Police, Inspector Mohamed Bobson Senu, on the 17 March, Kemoh took his son from the mother, Martha, to his second wife Francess who lives in a different house, after he had had a quarrel with Martha.

Inspector Senu said Francess prepared food for the baby who began vomiting profusely after eating it.

Doctors at the Bo Government Hospital, where the baby was immediately rushed to, subsequently referred him to the Emergency Hospital in Freetown where he is now recovering.

Inspector Senu told Politico that the case would be charged to court as soon as the police had sufficient evidence to back up the suspicion of poisoning.
