A Report published by the Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) has recommended for Media houses to address management issues through training and to also facilitate the development and training of governance structures of media houses especially for community radio stations.

According to the report, due to poor Management,  the current crop  of over 65% of managers of community radio stations have very little training or previous practical management experience hence over 65% of the stations are in relatively poor state, requiring serious management oversight, training and investment.

It linked to “Pringle’s suggestion” that media organizations like community radio stations fail because of poor management leadership where there are multiple accounts that cannot be accounted for thoroughly. It stated that Staff management is rudimentary and that most technical staff are “area boys and girls with virtually no experience.”

The report observed that generated revenue is small and cannot meet the operational costs of the stations leading to accountability and sustainability to be far-fetched.

It stated that enhancing the safety and protection of journalists is essential for fostering media freedom in Sierra Leone, noting that the government should develop and implement mechanisms to investigate and prosecute those who perpetrate violence against journalists by organizing specialized training programmes and workshops on safety measures, conflict reporting, and digital security should be provided to journalists.

It highlighted that building the capacity and professional development of journalists is crucial for enhancing media freedom in Sierra Leone.

The report reiterated that journalists should have access to training programmes, workshops, and mentorship opportunities to enhance their skills in investigative journalism, data journalism, digital media, and multimedia reporting.

The central Media Reform Coordinating Group is to strengthen quality journalism, promote media initiatives, coordinate media development and monitor the subtleties among the media, state and non-state actors.
