Defence boycotts Sierra Leone Court Martial

The prosecution in the ongoing mutiny trial of 14 soldiers seems to be running into trouble. Impeccable sources say the defence lawyers are on an indefinite strike of proceedings over pay. They are Julius Cuffie, Thomas Beah and IP Mammie.

It started last week when the defence bench had fresh faces with those who had put up "some sterling performances" as admitted to by families and relatives of the accused men, nowhere to be seen.

A source close to the defence says the lawyers are on a boycott because they have not been paid a single leone since they started work. They are supposed to be paid by the defence ministry. They are not expected in court tomorrow - the adjourned date - if their pay was not settled.

Close defence sources say the prosecution have received part payment for the same trial.

Several calls to the defence spokesman for their reaction were not answered.
