Sierra Leone’s Chief Justice, Desmond Babatunde Edwards has called on personnel of the global judiciary to dispense justice in an independent, transparent, and neutral manner.
The Chief Justice was addressing the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Working Group (WGIII) on the proposed establishment of a Multilateral Investment Court held at the UN headquarters in New York on Thursday 30th March 2023.
He said the dedication of the dispensation would help showcase their good image as against those labelling the arm of government as being biased.
As the Keynote Speaker, Justice Edwards was speaking on the topic “Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) reform and the proposed establishment of a Multilateral Investment Court (MIC).” His statement focuses on the "Future Relations between Domestic Courts and the Multilateral Investment Court."
The Chief Justice was there on the invitation of Sierra Leone’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
According to the Communications Unit of the Judiciary, Justice Edwards had earlier told the UN how Sierra Leone has an effective and efficient Fast Track Commercial Court with well-trained and qualified judges handling cases that come up needing expertise.
In his opening remarks, Sierra Leone’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Alhaji Fanday Turay, while highlighting the importance of the event said it will provide an opportunity for continuing engagements on the proposed multilateral investment court.
The Secretary of UNCITRAL and Director of the International Trade Law Division in the UN Office of Legal Affairs, Anna Joubin-Bret, Director General for Trade, and Ambassador Dr. Michael Imran Kanu were among the participants that made statements.
