The newly appointed President of the National Scrabble Association of Sierra Leone, Christian Asgill, has said his first priority will be to have more inclusion during his reign as President.
Asgill was appointed as the President of the association on Saturday, 20th June.
In his address to members, he said: "My main aim now is to get everybody who should be on board to take this association forward.”
Asgill said he believed that inclusiveness would be the fastest way for her to succeed. The Scrabble Association is one of many sporting associations in the country.
“I want to see people take the responsibility and come out and try to come out and make sure we make decisions together, because that is how scrabble association should be,” he said.
The association has struggled to raise funds and participate in tournaments abroad. Asgill encouraged members to pay their monthly dues to finance the association.
Asgill said with the support of members, the association will spread its activities across the country.
"I want to change the face of scrabble. I want us to work together to do that, and when people speak of scrabble, it will come across as positivity and change the whole negative vibes that is behind it," he said, adding: “Reviving scrabble clubs & setting up regional offices are all part of my plans, but it has to be collective responsibility to achieve that goal.”
As part of ways to popularize the game in schools, the association is already rolling out a program to encourage school pupils to play scrabble. Asgill said this is a project he is determined to continue with.
“This school scrabble project is our main focus, because if we are to succeed in popularizing the game, our target should be the schools, to encourage young boys and girls to play the game,” he went on.
As part of the project, school clubs have been formed. The associations said they are already training teachers who will transmit the knowledge to as many pupils as possible.
