The Western Area Referees over the weekend boycotted the opening match in the division (I) league of the Western Area Football Association’s (WAFA).
The match officials failed to show up even after the two team that were billed to play, Dollarosa and AIK Freetown arrived at the football Academy.
WAFRA, the body representing Western Area referees, says the organisers owe them money to the tune of 11 million Leones from the 2012/2013 league.
The Secretary General of WAFA Kasho Holland-Cole, confirmed that his organisation owes the referees the said amount since the last league season. He said they would "put on hold all matches for now" and meet to resolve the issue.
He blamed their financial predicament on the lack of sponsorship from the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA). But he thanked the SLFA executive for providing them with an office at the SLFA secretariat.
