  • Registrar John Juana addressing the lecturers

By Prince J Musa in Kenema

The registrar of the Eastern Polytechnic, John Juana has sent a stern message to lecturers of the institution to desist from demanding monies from students or exploiting them in other ways in return for grades. The registrar was addressing academic staff during a day’s in- service training at the institution’s Ahmad Tejan Kabba hall in Kenema on 23 June 2021.

He said there are still allegations from the students that certain lecturers are in the habit of collecting money from them for grades after conducting their exams, while others are harassing female students for sex, a situation he said the institution will not condone.

”As administration in charge to enforce the policy and procedure of this college, we will not hesitate to take any stringent action against any lecturers that is found wanting,’’ Juana warned.

He said the college is about to be transformed into a technical university for the region and would frown at anybody whose   behavior would dent the image of the institution.

He added that the initiative taken by the institution’s Human Resource Management Office in organizing the training was very significant and timely. The registrar noted that the authorities have made a lot of efforts in ensuring that the Eastern Polytechnic attains university status and that as an administration, they have to do their own assignment by making sure that the entity is well prepared for the transformation which has the attention of many easterners.

He said it was not going to be business as usual and therefore  expects the staff to demonstrate some amount of responsibility in executing their duties in a manner befitting lecturers. He said that should include code of dressing and observing all the necessary policies and procedures binding the college.

Juana reiterated that the administration has put mechanisms in place on how to collect information from students and colleague lecturers about the conduct of both groups and would expect lecturers in particular to know their limitations. He stated that they will ensure quality learning and called on all to comport themselves so they can deliver the best service to the college.

On the attitude of some lecturers who have not been complying with the institutional guidelines, the registrar used the session to inform the gathering that their allowances will not be paid because they fail to submit their examination booklets to the exams officer for compilation. He then urged all lecturers to be committed to their work.
