Statistics Sierra Leone has revealed that about 455,449 Sierra Leoneans are likely to be employed by 2017, betting its projections on what it said was the improved business environment that would continue to attract foreign direct investment.
An annual report released yesterday on what the institution had gathered from the performances of ten government ministries, departments and agencies, MDAs,over the last twelve months, said 14,609 of Sierra Leone’s employees were working for national and international non-government organizations.
Statistician General, Mohamed King Koroma, said “the document is produced every year, not only on regular surveys but also to monitor how government agencies or ministries are performing their functions, so that we can see and assess their performance and know if they are making improvements or not”.
He said the report also found out that there was 70% of national NGO’s operating in the country as opposed to the 29.35% of those operating at international level in the country, adding that “majority of them are engaged in health (43.5%) followed by education (18%), agriculture and microfinance”.
When asked why the report failed to cover the health sector, public relations officer, Statistics Sierra Leone said they had already done a demographic health survey, the report for which would be released in the coming year.
Tejan Kabbah said a survey was being planned to cover the education sector.
Other targeted areas would include the annual economic survey, tourism and statistics survey, Sierra Leone consumer price index, transport sector statistics, quarrying activities, business confidence index, non -governmental survey for national account compilation, employment survey, national account report, and survey of charcoal and business in urban centres in Sierra Leone.
