AT LAST OUR MAYOR OF THE SUN TO STOP FREE FLOWING FEACES IN FREETOWN

The Mayor of the Sun has finally indicated her willingness to clear raw sewage from the major streets of our capital after trying to ignore us for weeks on the issue. When we saw the press release we asked ourselves why it has to take several weeks of complaining by Freetown residents and our targeted reporting, for the Mayor of the Sun to issue a press release promising to clear up the mess.

The Mayor of the Sun has given herself a two-month deadline to complete the job. We started counting from the date on the press release. We now rest the issue and allow the FCC to get on with the job. In the meantime our contribution to this effort is to identify the trouble spots that the Mayor of the Sun must deal with during this period.

1. King Jimmy Bridge – The sewage pot is boiling right in the middle of the bridge. In fact we believe that is where the whole thing started. This is unbelievable! Are the engineers who reconstructed that bridge telling us they didn’t see the need to touch the sewerage system during that process?

2. Wallace Johnson Street, close to the bus terminal – Hundreds of people go to that place daily as they travel in and out of Freetown. The last thing they want to deal with is raw sewage flowing around them.

3. Siaka Stevens Street by Charlotte Street – Frankly how did we get to this stage where we allowed such a thing to happen on one of the major streets? Now the whole area is covered in very foul smell, as passing cars splash the messy water on people.

4. The area between Big Market and NASSIT building – This is the epicenter of the sewage overflow. It is very embarrassing, totally shameful. Our monitors will spend a lot of time watching over this area.

5. Pademba Road – The area around the camp hosting people with disability up to the junction with Campbell Street is a total mess. The thing flows freely and we have so far not seen anything concrete being done to address the issue. Surely this is not the Freetown we deserve.
