WHO’s Country Representative in Sierra Leone, Dr Jacob Mufundu, has told journalists in Freetown that his organisation will soon set up Ebola testing mobile laboratories in Kenema, Makeni, Freetown and other parts of the country.
He said the move aimed to boost the national fight against the disease, and that there was need to establish such labs across the country because the virus was taking a huge toll on the country.
“Now we are beginning to get cases in the Western Area and Port Loko district. We have already recorded cases in Bo,” Dr Mufundu said.
The UN envoy also said that they had already implemented diagnostic capacities in Kailahun and Kenema, which were currently serving the epicentres of the outbreak.
He however commended government's efforts in the fight, saying: “I don’t think it is fair to say the government has not done enough. We have on record that the government of Sierra Leone has committed US$10million to the fight.”
In a situational update, a WHO disease prevention specialist said “as of 11August, 2014, they have recorded 715 confirmed cases of the Ebola virus and 288 confirmed deaths in the entire country except for Koinadugu district.”
