Reducing West Africa’s worsening inequality divide

Last week: Oxfam – an independent NGO – focused on ending the injustices that cause poverty. Jointly with Development Finance International – a US-based international business development advisory firm – OXFAM produced a report titled: “The West Africa Inequality Crisis: How West African Governments are failing to reduce inequality and what should be done about it.” The report concludes that inequality is at “crisis levels” in West Africa.

East End Lions: The making of champions.

When East End Lions drew 0-0 with Freetown City FC (FCFC) in March, there was outrage. The Lions fans threw sachet of water on the players and coaches. Around the same time, FC Kallon were leading the table by two points.

Finally, just over a week ago, Lions were confirmed champions with two games to spare. The irony here is that they won against the same FCFC team 4-0 to finally win the title.

The Advertising industry is as old, as the country’s print media; in that the first newspaper, said to be published in Sub-Saharan Africa, in the year 1801, was called; The Royal Sierra Leone Gazette and Advertiser; which implies some level of advertising though almost certainly, not on today’s scale.

The status of the advertising industry in Sierra Leone leaves much to be desired, more especially in the electronic media, where the bulk of advertising is placed.

On Saturday, 13th July 2019 the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) will elect a new President and various officials to serve in its executive council.

The new President will replace Kelvin Lewis, who has served two terms, as per the association’s constitution.

This year’s election will be contested by current Secretary General, Ahmed Sahid Nasrallah and a former Secretary General, Mustapha Sesay. Both candidates share significant experiences in journalism and SLAJ politics.

On July 1, Senegalese authorities announced the seizure of 798kg of cocaine hidden in bags loaded in 15 Renault cars onboard the Italian vessel Grimaldi’s ro-ro GRANDE NIGERIA at the port of Dakar.

The boat had travelled from the port of Paranagua, the second largest port in Brazil in tonnage and the third in container shipping and was carrying cars manufactured in Brazil destined for Luanda, Angola. So far, no arrests have been made.

Mariama, who just arrived from Kuwait City, the capital of the Arabian country on the Persian Gulf, recalls how she got tied down as a maid not long after arriving in the Kingdom of Kuwait.

“I am aware there are no job opportunities in my country and I expect to get a good job once I travel abroad,” she says, speaking to newsmen at the offices of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Freetown upon her return home late last year.
