Ahead of the introduction of a Rubella vaccine in its national routine immunization program, Sierra Leone is due to commence a nationwide campaign to raise awareness and increase the chance of acceptance by the public.

The Rubella vaccine will be introduced in an integrated form with measles vaccines.

The Measles-Rubella Vaccine is a two in one vaccine used to vaccinate children from 0 to under 15 years against Measles and Rubella diseases. The two child diseases share similar features.

Ignorance about vaccines is fuelling safety fears in Sierra Leone with health authorities and campaigners warning of a threat to progress in immunization in the country.

The government and its partners are designing a response to counter a growing campaign of misinformation which they blame for these fears which are becoming paranoia.

The World Health Organisation has ranked Sierra Leone among countries with the highest burden of cases of tuberculosis - or TB - in the world.

In a new report published last week, Sierra Leone, alongside its next door neighbour Liberia, was placed among the top 10 countries with the highest number of TB cases per capita, with an official calling for redoubling of efforts by the government and its partners to tackle the epidemic.

STRIVE (Sierra Leone Trial to Introduce Vaccine against Ebola) is one of several trials conducted during the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Other trials were held in Guinea and Liberia which, like in Sierra Leone, were seriously affected by the deadly epidemic that ended up claiming over 11,000 lives by the time it was declared over by the World Health Organisation earlier this year.

Sierra Leone should endeavor to align its nutritional targets to those of the World Health Assembly, nutrition experts and activists have urged.

While the country seems to be performing progressively in meeting its nutrition targets, it is still far behind in a number of indicators like unavailability of data to inform on the actual progress being made towards fulfilling its commitments to the Nutrition For Growth (N4G), the campaigners from the Scalling Up Nutrition Initiative (SUNI) Civil Society Platform observed.
