Sierra Leone’s First Lady appointed UNAIDS Champion

Sierra Leone’s First Lady Dr. Fatima Bio has been appointed United Nations AIDS Champion.

The appointment took place in New York on the 19th September 2023 during the joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS.

“This is to certify that Her Excellency Mrs. Fatima Maada Bio, the First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone is appointed as a UNAIDS Champion for the empowerment and engagement of adolescent girls and young women”, the appointment document reads.

Action Aid calls to combat Climate Change threat

In a bid to minimise the threats posed by Climate Change in the country, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Action Aid Sierra Leone (AASL) has called on all including the government and other partners to collectively address the problem.

Action Aid and Christian Aid in partnership with the Women’s Network on Environmental Sustainability (WoNES) launched the flagship campaign and Report on Climate Change Adaptation and Sustainability Energy at the Family Kingdom Resort on the 20th of September 2023.

Accused discharges pepper spray on deceased’s face – Witness tells court

Prosecution Witness one (PW1), Alfred Ibrahim Conteh, has testified in  a Preliminary Investigation (PI) at a Magistrate court in Freetown over an alleged  murder  in Waterloo that the accused, Alpha Kamara discharged a pepper spray on the deceased, Abu Bakarr Munu’s face when they were fighting.  

He was testifying before Magistrate Mark Ngegba at the Pademba Road court No.1 on Wednesday 20th September 2023.

Sierra Leone validates health governance manual

Speaking at the Validation of the One Health Governance Manual, the National One Health Technical Coordinator, Joseph Anderson Bun ting-Graden has said Sierra Leone is far ahead in terms of One Health Platform in the West African sub-region.

Bunting-Graden was speaking on the topic of Validation of the One Health Governance Manual at a two-day reviewing process from 21St to 22nd September this year at the Radisson Blu Conference Hall.

Call for SIerra Leone to address due justice issues

The National Peace Education Advisor at United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) Idriss Gibson Mansaray has called on the government to address what he described as ‘due justice’ issues for sustainable peace in the country.

 As Sierra Leone joined the global community to commemorate International Peace Day on the 21st of September 2023, Mansaray explained the importance of the commemoration of the day to the people of Sierra Leone with the global theme: “Action for Peace, Ambition for Global Goal.”  

Calls for Sierra Leone to encourage workers’ unionism

The Deputy Secretary General of the Regional Trade Union Akhator Joel Odigie wants the government to create an enabling environment for workers to form unions and be empowered.  

Odigie made this call on the 20th of September 2023 at a meeting with the Minister of Employment and Social Security Mohamed Rahman Swaray, whilst discussing the welfare and safety of workers and African workers’ efforts to contribute to halting Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs).

43 criminal cases sent to High Court

In order to conclude the official High Court Call Over in view of opening of the criminal calendar, 43 criminal cases have been brought before the court, marking the beginning of the September 2023 criminal session.

The judicial session was held at the main Law Courts Building in Freetown on the 19th of September 2023.
