APC MPs have breached contract – says Speaker of Sierra Leone Parliament

 Speaker of Sierra Leone’s Parliament, Dr. Chernor Abass Bundu has said Opposition Members of Parliament Elect that are yet to take the oath of office have breached the contract they had with their people and urged them to assume their seats in parliament.  

Speaking in Parliament on the 17th of August 2023, Dr. Bundu stated that the elected MPs were not forced to contest for the position, and it is their duty to represent their people.

US Ambassador urges Sierra Leone president to dialogue

Outgoing United States Ambassador to Sierra Leone, David Reimer says President Julius Maada Bio is the President of Sierra Leone but called for dialogue between the Government and the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) and other parties so that the country can move forward.

Speaking during a radio interview in Freetown on Wednesday 16th August, the ambassador said they would like to see the government dialogue with civil society and political parties.

Sierra Leone Police condemns mob justice in fight against Kush drug

In reaction to growing mob justice particularly in the Western Area, the Sierra Leone Police have strongly condemned the practice in a public notice issued on the 16th of August, 2023.

According to the notice, the violent acts ‘in the guise of exercising justice’ culminate in what the Police say are extra-judicial killings of suspected thieves or miscreants in some local communities which they view as homicidal and a serious miscarriage of justice.

ECOWAS reaffirms use of force option in Niger

The regional bloc ECOWAS has affirmed its use of force option, to reverse the coup in Niger, is still on the cards, following a meeting of West African Military Chiefs in Ghana, on Thursday, to discuss the crisis.

Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah- the organisation’s Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security in a BBC interview asserted the resolve of ECOWAS to intervene militarily in a bid to reinstate deposed President Mohamed Bazoum.

MP appeals for boat for school kids in southern Sierra Leone

Pujehun District Member of Parliament Abu Kemokai Children in has appealed to the government and stakeholders concerned to procure boats for children commuting to and from school.

Kemokai who was on the 16th of August 2023 debating on the Presidential speech said: “I want to report to this house and draw the attention of the Ministry that for our children living in those riverine communities, they need boats to access their schools. I want to call on the Ministry to procure a boat for them.”

Sierra Leone calls for local guns to be registered

Civil Society actors and officials of Sierra Leones Small Arms Commission have called on all local gun manufacturers or Blacksmiths to ensure their products are registered in the Commission’s database.

The actors were speaking during an engagement with the blacksmiths on the 15th of August 2023.
