50 million Euros for Sierra Leone’s energy and agriculture sectors

Parliament has debated and ratified a 50 million Euros financial agreement grant between the European Union (EU) and the Government of Sierra Leone to increase renewable energy supply for the State and other agricultural-related development.

The ratification of the grant took place at the Well of Parliament on the 30th of March 2023.

$30 million for Gendema, Mattru bridges

The Ministries of Finance, Agriculture and Works have signed a 30 million dollar grant contract with Sino-Hydro Bureau 9 JV Construction Company for the construction of the Gendema and Matru Jong bridges in Kenema and Bonthe Districts respectively.

The agreement will also see the construction of four bridges in Kailahun, Karene, Kenema and Bonthe districts which are all bridges that will replace crossing points used by manual cable ferries.

Human Rights Commission calls for peaceful elections in Sierra Leone

The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) has urged everyone to maintain a peaceful status quo as the country braces up for the 24th June 2023 General elections.

The commission made this call in a press statement published on the 30th March 2023 on the current public debate on Human Rights concerns in the country.

Court may recall witnesses in Sierra Leone’s New York Chancery Building trial

The Lead lawyer for Dr. Samura Kamara in the ongoing New York Chancery case at the High Court in Freetown has asked the court to recall two prosecution witnesses on Wednesday 5th April 2023 saying he had some issues to clarify with them. Lawyer Frank Kargbo made the request when the trial resumed on Monday 3rd April, almost two weeks after the court first inspected the chancery building at the center of this trial in New York.

Sierra Leone to tap into private sector for improved health

Sierra Leone’s Vice President, Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh PhD has expressed the government’s intention to tap into opportunities offered by the private sector in the area of health.

The Vice President was speaking during an engagement with the private sector partners held at Radisson Blu Hotel in Freetown on Monday 3rd April 2023.

After highlighting some of the projects the private sector has been undertaking towards supporting government efforts in the health sector, he also thanked them for their continued support.

Sierra Leone increases vehicle owners' tax to Le 200,000 yearly

The Newly enacted Finance Act 2023 mandates vehicle owners in Sierra Leone to pay two hundred thousand old Leones annually per vehicle as an annual circulation levy.  The Act was yesterday 4th April 2023 passed into law by the house of Parliament.

The Commissioner-General of the National Revenue Authority (NRA) Samuel Jibao and the Minister of Finance Sheku F. Bangura both at the pre-legislative hearing parliament on the 3rd of April 2023 asserted that the move is to generate revenue for the government.

Man convicted for fraud in Makeni

Justice Unisa Kamara of the Makeni High Court has sentenced Alimamy Kabbia  Chairman of a social group based in Makeni called “Like Minds,” to two years and six months imprisonment or pay a fine of NLE 5000 (Five thousand new Leones) to the state for embezzling the group’s fund.
