Sierra Leone’s highest court Okays Proportional Representation electoral system for June 2023 election

A judgment delivered by a panel of five judges of the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone led by the Chief Justice, Desmond Babatunde Edwards has confirmed that the 2023 general elections be held by applying the Proportional Representation(PR) system of voting.

Justice Edwards stated “all the conditions precedent for the holding of or conducting of general elections of ordinary members of parliament through a District Block Representation system were met and/or fulfilled.”

Saudi Arabia steps up recruitment of Sierra Leone migrant workers

Saudi Labour officials and their Sierra Leonean counterparts are in advanced plans that would see hundreds of Sierra Leoneans recruited to work in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

This was disclosed by Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Dr. Ibrahim Jalloh in an exclusive interview with Politico.

He said the rapid turn of events was a culmination of two agreements  Sierra Leone’s Labour Minister Alpha Timbo signed  on behalf of the government , with the Saudis in June last year.

Sierra Leone to evict senior civil servants to make way for Turkish and Saudi embassies

The authorities have ordered some senior civil servants and their families to vacate their quarters at Hill Station, close to State Lodge, within the next two weeks for their housing units to be knocked down and the land allocated to the governments of Turkey and Saudi Arabia to construct their embassies.

Some of the affected people told Politico they were “devastated”.

Gov’t approves audit recommendations manual

The Government of Sierra Leone has approved the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) Manual to follow up on the implementation of audit recommendations for all public sector entities, issued by either the Auditor-General or the Internal Audit Department. 

The formulation of the SOP manual was disclosed by the Ministry of Finance in a press release issued out on the 27th January, 2023.

Windstorm claims 200 buildings in Zimmi

200 houses were known to have been affected in Zimmi town, Pujehun District, following a windstorm in the early hours of Thursday 26th January, according to a Ward Councilor, Abdul Karim Fofana.  

 Fofana said hundreds of people are without shelter and were sleeping in the open.

He said in some cases, up to 15 people are forced to sleep in a single room, raising fears of diseases spreading in the town.  Zimmi Senior Secondary School was also destroyed.
