Sierra Leone MP wants effective ECOWAS

The Leader of the opposition in Parliament Chernor Maju Bah has urged the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mamadi Gobeh Kamara to encourage ECOWAS to be effective, stating that with an effective regional body, protocols bordering agreements between the Governments of Sierra Leone and the Republic of Gambia will not be brought to parliament.

Bah made this call on the 24th January 2023, during his debate on the four agreements between the government of Sierra Leone and the Republic of The Gambia, and  Qatar.

Sierra Leone Commercial Bank urges staff to work harder

The Managing Director of Sierra Leone Commercial Bank, Yusuf Silla, has urged staff of the bank to work harder and maintain the legacy of the past dedicated workers of the bank.

Silla said this at the launch of the “Hall of Fame” in honouring the hard work of the past and current staff of the bank, an event that was held at SLCB’s headquarters in Freetown, Saturday 21st January, 2023.

Edmond Abu’s sentence suspended

Civil Society Activist and Director of Native Consortium, Edmond Abu who was serving 21 days imprisonment for contempt of court has had his sentence suspended for 12 months, and allowed to leave prison after 10 days of incarceration.

 In his ruling at the High Court No.1 in Freetown on Friday 20th January, 2023, Justice Adrian Fisher warned Abu that the one year suspended sentence was on condition that he does not repeat such conduct.

Hall of Fame for Sierra Leone Commercial Bank

Sierra Leone Commercial Bank (SLCB) is to have a Hall of Fame in recognition of those dedicated workers, past and present including the pioneers of the country’s first indigenous banking institution.

This was disclosed at the inaugural event in Freetown to mark the start of events commemorating 50th Anniversary of the bank that was attended by senior government officials and banking executives.

Movement to wage elections peace campaign

The Executive Director at the Institute for Governance Reform (IGR) Andrew Lavalie has said that the Unifiers’ Movement is to wage a peace campaign for the 2023 elections. He made this statement during discussions on this year’s citizens’ manifesto, an event held in Freetown on Friday 20th January 2023.

“Too often we talk about violence, we do not talk about peace. So this election we are waging peace not war” said Lavalie

Bench warrant for Juror in murder case

Justice Simeon Alieu on Thursday 19th January ordered a bench warrant for a Juror, Simeon Amara, after he failed to show up in three consecutive sittings in a murder case.

The judge wanted him detained at the Correctional Centre in Freetown for not honouring the High Court No.5 sessions in which an accused Abdulai Koroma is facing a murder trial.

Sierra Leone to extend Pepel rail and port

The Government of Sierra Leone has signed an agreement with ARISE Integrated Industrial Platform LTD for the expansion of the Pepel Port and Railway.

The project’s business plan, financial model and pre-feasibility studies are estimated at 476 million dollars covering the refurbishment of the Pepel Tonkolili Railway, and the Pepel Port- Railway connectivity to Marampa mines.

It is also set to introduce passenger rail services and rail connection to Guinea.
