University students react angrily to 25% fee increase in Sierra Leone

Students of the various constituent colleges of the University of Sierra Leone have expressed concerns over a twenty-five percent Fee increment by the University.

The Director of Public Relations, Alumni, and International Affairs for USL, James Tamba Lebbie confirmed the increment in an interview with Politico.  He attributed the increase to the inflation affecting prices of goods and services.  

The students Politico spoke to express their discontent over the increment, saying it is a “huge financial burden.”

Sierra Leone reviews GST threshold to Le 500 million

The Director General of Sierra Leone Local Content Agency, Fodeba Dabo, has applauded the Government’s move to set the threshold of 500 Million Old Leones and above yearly turnover for businesses that are to pay Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Before this latest directive which would be welcomed, businesses with a yearly turnover of 100 Million Old Leones and above were subjected to paying the GST.

119 reported animal bites in Kenema – Vet officer

The Veterinary Officer attached to the Livestock Division in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security, Kenema District, has told Politico that their office recorded 119 cases of Animal bites suffered by residents so far since the start of the year.

Paul Ngegba said they had received cases associated with dogs, snakes, and even cats though at the time of the interview, he couldn’t give a breakdown of the different cases received by the vet division.

Bank Governor talks about addressing inflation

The newly-appointed Governor of the Central Bank of Sierra Leone, Dr. Ibrahim Stevens has noted that part of his responsibility is to maintain monetary stability and address inflation in the country.

MP appeals for completion of Lumley hospital

Member of Parliament representing Western Area Urban, Mahmoud Kamara has urged the Government to complete a hundred-bed Lumley Government Hospital which he claimed had been abandoned.

The MP made this call on the 22nd of November 2024, whilst debating the bill entitled Appropriation Act 2024. He called on the government to include the hospital as part of the projects they seek to complete in 2024.
