Member of Parliament for Constituency 108 in the Western Area, Michel Sho-Sawyer, has called on the new minister of tourism, Peter Bayuku Conteh to protect all beaches in the country. Just after he had been approved on Tuesday, the minister was urged to raise the tourism sector, especially the beaches whose beauty was said to be being seriously affected by sand mining in Freetown. Sho-Sawyer suggested to the new minister that his first priority should seek to address the problem of sand mining. He said that if measures were not put in place, the “illicit activity” would affect the touristic potentials of the country, especially its landscape. In his response the minister promised to look into the matter, and stressed the need for serious control measures for such activities which he said could be dangerous to the environment and its people.
