Seven years for wounding

By Saio Marrah

Justice Ansumana Ivan Sesay has sentenced one Unisa Michael Ghandi to seven years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to wounding one Sasco Kamara in his head which resulted in him being treated in hospital with 20 stitches.

Pronouncing the sentence on 17th May 2023, the judge said the sentence was reduced to seven years because the convict did not waste the time of the court by pleading guilty. He said given the seriousness of the extent of the injury indicated in the medical report, the accused was looking at up to 40 years in prison, if he had been convicted after trial. He said the accused intended to kill his victim.

Defence lawyer, Ibrahim Samba from the Legal Aid Board, pleaded with the judge to temper justice with mercy, noting that the convict was a first-time offender and as a young man he had learned his lesson from the time already spent on remand.

In a separate case of wounding with intent, 18-year-old Joseph McCarthy was sentenced to 12 months including the seven months he had spent on remand.

McCarthy told the court he used his teeth to bite the victim during a fight.
