Infanticide in Koinadugu

By Steven Bockarie Mansaray

Police in Kabala have arrested 24-year-old Yeabu Mansaray on allegations of infanticide. She is alleged to have killed her newly-born baby and wrapped her inside a plastic bag and dumped it by a stream.

Yeabu lived in Kodala village in Wara Wara Yagala Chiefdom in Koinadugu district where she was in a relationship with one Samuel Sesay, a married man, following the death of her husband.

Her relationship with Samuel later became a serious problem with the latter’s wife who allegedly humiliated Yeabu’s relatives, to the extent he (Samuel) was taken to the local court where he was asked to end the relationship with Yeabu.

Last week children in the village went to a nearby stream to swim where they saw a black plastic bag with something wrapped inside it. They ran back to the village and told their parents that they had found a monkey wrapped inside a plastic.

Some people dashed to the stream and found that it was a dead baby that was inside the plastic.

The village authorities later called on one nurse Isatu Kargbo in charge of the area health centre in Heremakono to help identify the content and who could have been the mother.

After her findings, Yeabu Mansaray was alleged to have killed her newly born baby and was arrested by the local authorities who handed her over to the Kabala police station.

A postmortem has been conducted by the District Medical Officer, Dr. Manso Dumbuya and the corpse has been handed over to the relatives of the suspect for burial while she and her elder sister Tenneh Mansaray are in police custody.

Samuel Sesay told Politico that since then, he ended the relationship with the suspect whom he said never told him she was carrying his pregnancy.
