Sport betting company, Mercury International has donated twelve million, eight hundred twenty-five thousand leones and two (2) return air tickets to the executive of the Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone, SWASSAL, according to a press release signed by the association's Secretary General Magnus Cole.
Handing over the cheque at his office in Central Freetown, Mercury chairman Samir Hassaniyeh spoke about his company’s long commitment to SWASSAL. "We have a good working relationship with SWASAL and we are proud to inform the general public that so far we are satisfied with their performance in promoting sports in general and football in particular in this country", said Hassaniyeh.
SWASAL Financial Secretary Mohamed Konneh who received the cheque, said the money will be used to fund two SWASAL members, Abu Bakarr Kanu (Kalleone Radio) and Musa Sesay (Exclusive newspaper)-to cover the Leone Stars versus Swaziland 2015 AFCON qualifying match on May 17/18 2014, in Mbabane.
Konneh said, "this money will be used to pay for accommodation, provide per diem, internal transportation, scratch cards for the live commentary and daily updates to the local radio stations".
He thanked chairman Samir Hassaniyeh, the Board of Mercury, the Executive Director Mr. Martin E. Michael and all Mercury subscribers for their "remarkable support to the association over the years".
