54 local council candidates trained

By Septimus Senessie in Kono

As the clock keeps ticking towards the 17 November polls, a Danish non-governmental organisation, Ibis, has trained 54 candidates for the local council election at the Koidu City Hall. They included 32 females and 22
youth and were drawn from five existing parties in the district – NDA, UDM, PMDC, SLPP and APC.

According to the facilitator of the training, James Tamba Lebbie from the Mass Communications department at Fourah Bay College, the training bordered on “running an effective local campaign” in the 2012 general elections. He said the aspirants were trained on basic communication skills in campaign and campaign strategies which they shall use in carrying out their campaign activities in their various wards.

Lebbie told the participants to apply all they had learned during the two-day training and stay away from preaching hate massages or assassinating the character of their fellow candidates during their campaigns.

The Governance Programme Assistant of Ibis in Kono, Rebecca Yei Kamara told Politico that they organized the training for the female and youth candidates because they were being marginalized by society. She said the training would help build the capacity of the aspirants in carrying out their campaigns successfully.

Rebecca said that 16 female and 6 youth candidates would be supported with banners, flyers, t-shirts and radio programmes to carry out their campaigns.
