A document leaked to Politico shows that President Ernest Bai Koroma will lead a 45-member Sierra Leone delegation to the United Nations General Assembly meeting next week. State House sources say he leaves over the weekend despite initial scare that an injury picked up when playing squash might stop him from making it to the 68th session of the annual GA meeting. Sources at the finance ministry say that per diem for the trip is anywhere between $450 and $ 500 per day, per delegate. Excepting those delegates who work at the UN Mission in New York, 11 of them, all other members of the delegation are entitled to this amount. The sources say that ticket cost for State House delegates alone is around Le 500 million. For delegates from other ministries and departments, finance ministry sources say ticket for each of them could have cost around US$ 3,000. A source at the Sierra Leone Mission in New York says instructions were received last week for 11 suites to be booked ahead of the visit and for food to be prepared for the delegation. It is not immediately how much the entire trip will cost. But the Executive Director of the Centre for Accountability and Rule of Law says it is a “classic demonstration of a wasteful government”. Ibrahim Tommy told Politico that if the government was serious about rolling out the agenda for prosperity so that it would benefit everyone it must “ensure that it manages its resources well” which he said this was not. He lamented that the lack of a Freedom of Information Law meant that the total cost of the trip, however exorbitant, might not be known. Tommy said this called into question President Koroma’s transparency credentials. An official in the ministry of information, Abdulai Bayraytay confirmed to Politico that it was difficult to ascertain the true cost of the trip since the ticket prices varied and the delegates would be spending different number of days and were from different cities and countries. Contrary to what he told Radio Democracy, the following list of the delegation proves that the Millennium Challenge Corporation team is separate from this trip. MEMBERS OF THE DELEGATION 1.
