The Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Wang Qing has stated that his country is committed to capacitating the Sierra Leone Police with equipment.
Wang made this statement in his visit, together with the Sandong Police College team, to the Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu at his George Street office, in Freetown on 17th January this year.
“I am looking forward to working with you IGP Sellu,” the Ambassador said, adding that this year would bring ‘more opportunities’ to build the capacity of police personnel and enhance the existing cooperation between the two nations.
In his remarks, IGP Sellu expressed delight at the Ambassador’s effort to link the Sierra Leone Police with the Shandong Police College in China.
The IGP further noted that China and Sierra Leone are ‘born’ friends, adding that China has provided a lot of support to Sierra Leone, citing training programmes and other benefits that the SLP has acquired from China. He recalled the donation of Digital Data Forensic Laboratory Equipment to the SLP by the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone, saying the visit of the Ambassador did not come as a surprise.
“I was very happy when I received the information about the visitation of the Shandong Police College,” he said, expressing hope that the friendship will continue to be ‘more’ productive, saying“It is all about building our police officers.”
Giving the reason for their visit, the Vice President of the Shandong Police College, Sui Congorong said it was to learn about the Sierra Leone Police trainees that were sent to the said college to acquire knowledge on courses offered. Since the establishment of the college in 1946, she said it has been operating on two campuses, for in-service training and foreign aid for police officers from various countries, and that it has hosted over sixty international training programmes for various nations, including Sierra Leone.
“China and Sierra Leone have developed smooth diplomatic ties for over fifty-two years,” Congorong said, adding that their visit would enhance win-win cooperation.
