The Freetown City Council has refurbished a nursery and pre-primary school at Aberdeen in the west of Freetown. The education officer at the council, Henry Fyfe, said the building of the “We Are The Future” school was closed down some three weeks ago over administrative problems and the fact that the school was not functioning properly. “The floors were dilapidated, grass had overtaken the playgrounds and it was therefore not good for kids” he said, adding that “classrooms were very filthy, and one of the metal doors was falling off posing serious danger to the kids,” he said. Fyfe said the roof was leaky and was becoming a source of sickness for the pupils, pointing out that those were among some administrative issues that prompted the education department at the council to intervene to refurbish the school.
Councillor for the ward, 392, Magarieu Tejan-Cole said that he would call a community meeting and would serve as a temporary overseer for the school. The councils also rehabilitated the youth and craft centre at Beach Road in Aberdeen. The Wharf Centre, as it is called, used to be a place for vocational skills training. (C) Politico 10/10/13
