Crab Town fights open defecation

By Tilly Barrie

Chairman WASH at Crab Town says the area found in the west end of Freetown was being used for dumping human waste and open defecation, making it vulnerable to cholera outbreaks.

Alhassan Deen Turay, who heads the water and sanitation advocacy group, WASH, lamented the state of affairs that was made worse by the nonexistence of water supply.

He said people fetched water from private houses in a community of more than 4,000 residents. He said they were trying to work with MASADA, the company charged with waste management in Freetown, to see how they could help with the community dispose of dirt and waste.

He said they threw their dirt and all other wastes into the sea because the balloon like toilets had not been completed and the community continued to expand with more than 50 buildings in the creek.

Chairman of Crab Town community, Alakea Smith, said that people from some dance troop in Aberdeen had been relocated to the creek.

“We have therefore advocated to NGOs to help the expanding community and to the National Commission for Social Action, NaCSA,to helpus construct the road which the community has been using”, he said.
