Police in the southern district headquarter town of Bo are investigating a hunter, Alie Barrie, who allegedly shot and killed his co-hunter, Ali Koroma, while they were out hunting around Ngeindema village in the Bumpeh Gao chiefdom.
Police media and public relations officer in the district, Constable Abubakarr Sidique Kamara told Politico that they had obtained statement which confirmed that on 1 August this year, both the deceased and the suspect, who is now in their custody, left the village on “a hunting expedition”.
He said they stayed out hunting from 10:00 pm to 2:00 am when they both agreed to return to the village and have some rest. He said that on their way returning the suspect, Alie Barrie, recalled that he had seen a certain deer with her baby and that he wanted to go back to get them.
So they parted ways, he recalled, adding that the suspect thought the deceased was either gone or was inside a farm hut, resting.
The police media spokesman said Barrie actually killed the mother deer but also spotted a male deer but could not automatically release his shot until he was able to confirm the position of the deer.
The suspect reportedly told police that he pulled the trigger but later heard the deer raising his voice and sounding, strangely, like a human being. Just when he moved towards the deer, he heard his friend crying “you have killed me”.
The body is at the Bo government mortuary awaiting post-mortem while the suspect is helping the police in their investigations.
