IPAM-USL, parliament in partnership

By Politico staff writer

The Institute of Public Administration and Management, University of Sierra Leone (IPAM, USL), on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at improving the professional development of the students through on –the- job work experience before they graduate.

Among other things, the Understanding is for the purpose of sending students to the House of Parliament “to work as interns which will help them build their capacities and learn firsthand how to translate theories they have learnt into practice”.

Deputy Vice Chancellor of IPAM-USL, Associate Professor Miriam Conteh-Morgan said her administration is looking forward to students having diverse experiences outside of the classroom setting. She noted that the understanding reached with Parliament, which is regarded as the seat of governance in the country, would enrich students’ learning experiences, especially those in the Faculty of Leadership and Governance. “This move is in line with one of the pillars of the IPAM agenda,” Prof. Conteh-Morgan noted, pointing out that the “P-Pillar of IPAM” stands for promoting “students enrichment activities so as to produce graduates who are intellectually, socially, morally and culturally prepared to be responsible national and global citizens”.

She singled out Dr. Fallah Lamin, Head of the Department of Leadership and Sustainable Development for pioneering discussions that culminated into the signing of the MoU.

The Director General of the Parliament of Sierra Leone, Finda F. Frazer said that was the first time such an understanding has been reached between the two institutions.  She pointed out that the four-year partnership between her institution and IPAM, USL is a demonstration that Parliament is working to promote the capacity of people, and to ensure that the agenda for education in the country moves forward.

Signing on behalf of the University of Sierra Leone and IPAM were the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof. Foday Sahr, and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Miriam Conteh-Morgan respectively while the Director-General of Parliament, Finda F. Frazer signed on behalf of her institution.
