Kenema Medical Superintendent bids farewell

  • Dr Austin Demby, Health minister

By Prince J Musa in Kenema

After serving the Kenema Government Hospital for over four years, the facility’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Ibrahim Mark Kapuwa has bid farewell to its staff and management.

In an interview with Politico, Dr. Kapuwa said despite issues that are bound to happen in any working environment, they were able to achieve a lot for the hospital and commended the staff and management for their roles.

He noted that when he took over as a medical superintendent of the hospital, it was in a terrible state.

“Kenema government hospital was a death trap for pregnant women when I took over five years back,’’ he recalled.

He said the entire hospital was not patient- friendly especially in the area of environmental hygiene and sanitation and had to engage the management and staff to change that gloomy state of the hospital.

He stated that as a health practitioner, he embarked on face-lifting the hospital by rehabilitating some major buildings, strengthening service delivery, and establishing a pharmacy and patients Chart.

On cleft palate surgery he had been championing for Kenema, he assured that it will continue as a lot of his staff got the opportunity to be sent to Ghana and Nigeria to undertake training on how to do the process. He stated that  in September this year, another set of cleft palate  operations will be done on patients from various areas  in Kenema, it has become the hub for such operations.

Dr. Kapuwa appealed to staff and management to give more support to the incoming medical superintendent as he has a wealth of experience and technicality to improve the status of the hospital.

In his reaction, the incoming medical superintendent, Dr. Jalloh, assured the staff and management to continue the good work and maintain the standard that was set by his predecessor to improve service delivery in the hospital. He called on all to work as a team so that they can give confidence to the public to come to the hospital instead of taking medical treatment at home.

One of the Senior Nurses, Massa Kamara commended the outgoing medical superintendent for impacting much knowledge on them, inspiring and motivating them which have all enhanced their capability to become professionals in the health sector. She assured that they will give similar support to the new medical superintendent who has over the years spent time with them in the hospital.
