Following days of reported election violence across the country, the National Commission for Democracy (NCD) has condemned all forms of ‘arbitrariness and lawlessness’ and called for political tolerance in Sierra Leone.
The commission made this call in a press release dated 22nd June 2023 following the successful conclusion of stakeholders’ engagements across the country.
It urged all not to give up on dialogue before, during, and after the 2023 polls as everyone strives to consolidate the nation’s democracy. It noted with deep concern that at this pace, Sierra Leoneans can only bring the nation to her knees and make her a laughing stock to the international community that is watching with bated breath as citizens demonstrate levels of intolerance that cannot be easily fathomed.
NCD further noted in the release that what is unfolding before everybody’s eyes should not be treated with levity, but should be given utmost attention as citizens make sincere decisions in resolving differences. It also urged everyone to express willingness to exercise mutual respect and tolerance in resolving differences and changing the narrative in the quest for peace in Sierra Leone.
It further calls on all well-meaning Sierra Leoneans to make a conscious effort to avoid all forms of violence regardless of the perpetrators. It reminds all Sierra Leoneans, whether in the context of the governors or the governed, that the national colors in the context of the National Flag should keep everyone united and peaceful and be tolerant.
The commission further reminds all and sundry that the country is at a crossroads, a make-or-break moment, but urges all to be on the right side of history for a befitting legacy that will make for commendation instead of condemnation. It went on to state in the release that Sierra Leone needs respite from its present woes and calls on well-meaning Sierra Leoneans to grant her the needed respite.
It, therefore, urges all to make a date with destiny as they use the polling day to vote wisely and make Sierra Leone proud again.
The Council of Churches in Sierra Leone (CCSL) in a statement appealed to citizens to take up their full civic responsibilities to quietly cast their votes on Saturday, June 24, 2023. It ended by calling on all to continue to pray, advocate and participate in the forth-coming multi-tier elections.
