A 30-mile feeder road construction linking 16 villages is underway in Nimikor Chiefdom, Kono District. The road, which starts from Bandafada, close to Motema and runs through to Kpukuya is expected to boost economic and agricultural activities in the chiefdom.
The special assistant to the Paramount Chief of Nimikor Chiefdom, Sahr Abdulai Komasie told Politico that the project was partly funded from the Diamond Area Community Development Fund (DACDF). He said a D-8 caterpillar was hired for an initial period of 100 hours and was paid the sum of US$ 1,300 for every eight hours. Komasie noted that the chiefdom received the sum of Le 120 million from the DACDF, which he said was grossly inadequate for the road project. He added that the chiefdom administration would seek funding elsewhere to complete the construction project.
Chairman of the 16 Village Committee, Aiah Jimisa Kondewa said the construction of a road linking several communities to Motema and the chiefdom headquarter town of Jaiama Nimikor was “a dream come true”. He said such a road would ameliorate the suffering of their people, especially women, as well as help school kids in those communities who walk long distances to access markets and schools.
He expressed optimism that with the construction of a road network, the local council and their development partners would help provide social amenities like health centres and schools. He thanked paramount chief for “his visionary strides”.
Paramount Chief Aiah Denton Bona Foamansa III said the construction of the road network was a decision taken by the chiefdom council, comprising all five sections in his chiefdom, in a meeting convened to decide what to do with the funds from the DACDF. He said that he approved the decision even though the money was insufficient for the project. PC Bona said they would have to look somewhere else for complementary funding for the completion of the project.
