Njala University will tomorrow continue with its week-long activities of marking 50 years of its existence.
President of the alumni association, Sanusi Deen said the institution was founded in 1964 as a university college, with the support of the United States agency for international development (USAID) and the technical implementation agency of one of the best agriculture schools in the USA, the University of Illinois.
He explained that in 1967, with the passage of the University of Sierra Leone Act, Njala University College became a constituent of the University of Sierra Leone together with Fourah Bay College.
“In 2005 the new University Act separated FBC from Njala University and the latter became a distinct [and] independently run university”, Deen said, adding that as a result the college, together with Bo Teachers' College, the School of Hygiene and the Paramedical School in Bo, constituted Njala University as an autonomous university, with Bonthe Technical Training College (BONTEC) as an affiliate tertiary institution.
The alumni president said the university turned 50 this month and could boast of having three campuses in the country – in Njala, Bo and Freetown. He said in the remaining days of activities, they would cater for about 2,000 people coming from across the country.
“The Alumni will join the administration to organise the foundation with a number of activities like a banquet, sporting events for University staff association. The students’ union and alumni association will organize reunion night, a University Ball and a host of other wonderful events between 12 and 15 this month”, Deen assured.
