Head of the Political Parties’ Registration Commission says the mandate of the commission is way above organising and regulating political parties to participate in elections.
Justice Tholla Thompson told journalists, at the close of a 5-day professional enhancement training organised by the United Nations for PPRC staff, that many people made lots of mistakes as far as the mandate of the PPRC was concerned.
He observed that “people lack the appropriate knowledge that would enable them make informed and correct decisions in elections. But we are determined to ensure that we educate the public and equip them with information they would use to make the best of choices”.
He went on to observe that a good number of the public “thinks that the work of the PPRC ends after elections are conducted. But the fact is that we have even more work to do after and before elections, as there is always an election round the corner”.
Justice Thompson said their main job was to ensure that the ten political parties in the country “stay on course until another election year”. He assured that as a commission they would do all in their power to ensure that their staff across the country put into practice all the skills and knowledge they had acquired.
