Scrabble, latest sporting discipline in Sierra Leone

By Kemoh Sesay

Scrabble has been officially added to the sporting disciplines in Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Sports has said.

The development comes after the National Scrabble Association of Sierra Leone (NSASL) officially becomes the 32nd Sporting association to register with the Sports Council of Sierra Leone last month.

Jeffery Coker, President of NSASL, told Politico that Scrabble was one of the most unique sports which involved words and spelling power. He noted that in the modern day society were education was paramount amongst young people, it would be easy for the people to take Scrabble as a sporting discipline. He said persistence and untiring efforts from the association had paid off when they gained recognition.

“We are grateful with the Sports Council for granting us this recognition,” said Coker.

According to Minister of Sports Paul Kamara, who earlier broke the news of the inclusion of the NSASL in the Council’s register, scrabble should institute a new mentality in individuals of other sporting discipline. Kamara said he was very interested to see pilot projects, tapping of opportunities and accessing funds in support of the association.
