Sierra Leone FA Deputy Secretary General resigns

By Umaru Fofana

The Deputy Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has resigned effective immediately.

In his letter to the FA president, Isha Johanssen, dated 1 July, Abdul Rahman Swaray cites “family reasons and other official engagements in academia”, which he says can no longer allow him to provide the services the FA post requires of him.

Swaray has been a lecturer at the Mass Communications department of Fourah Bay College for over 10 years.

“To the football fans and administrators, I crave on your forgiveness for my singular err during my short career at the helm of my administrative era…” the letter reads in part. He would not say what that “singular err” was.

Swaray had served as Deputy Secretary General before becoming Secretary General of the SLFA under the FIFA-installed Normalisation Committee in 2010, and oversaw the election that brought the current president into office.

He continued in his role under Mrs Johanssen until May 2014 when Chris Kamara was appointed.

He was later appointed, again, as Deputy Secretary General and acted as Secretary General during the recent suspension of the FA President and Secretary General. A suspension which was lifted after their acquittal by a high court.

A former Vice President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists, Swaray also served as the Education Officer for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for four years.

There has been no reaction yet from the FA to his departure, which many say could impact the ongoing Premier League which he was instrumental in kick-starting.
