The Ministry of Sports (MOS) and the National Sports Authority (NSA) have last Monday 4th January lifted the ban on all sporting activities across the country after an engagement with the National COVID-19 Response Centre (NaCOVERC).

A press release from the ministry says all sporting activities will be allowed to proceed but with the necessary precautionary measures adhered to. NSA and MOS say they would conduct national monitoring to ensure full compliance with all existing COVID-19 regulations at all sports venues.

Speaking to Politico, the Public Relations Officer of the Sierra Leone Football Association, Ibrahim Kamara encouraged all football administrators, coaches and players to adhere to the rules and regulations of the COVID-19 measures.

When asked how playing behind closed doors will affect the revenue base of clubs, Kamara said “We have no option. This is the present situation all over the globe; it is not our mandate at this time to allow spectators into football venues. That has to be determined by the government.”

Kamara cited other countries where football is being played but with just a small amount of supporters in the stadiums saying that if the government deems it fit for the matches to be played behind closed doors, “then it’s for the safety of each and every citizen.”

He said the SLFA has appointed a new Premier League Board that has been given the responsibility to determine when the new premier league football season should start.
