Representatives from four political parties, the All Peoples Congress (APC) party, Coalition for Change (C4C), National Grand Coalition (NGC), and the ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) have signed a communiqué against the use of obscenities, vulgarities and hate speech whilst carrying their activities.
The communiqué was signed at a dialogue lunch convened by the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) on the 6th March 2023 at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown
The parties agreed to promote, observe and enforce the observance of the cultural and moral values of the society and to condemn all forms of hate speech against political opponents.
It was also agreed that they will continue to engage and admonish their members and supporters to refrain from all such conduct aforementioned in the course of their activities.
They also resolved to support and cooperate with the Sierra Leone Police, in identifying and arresting perpetrators of all such proscribed conduct, in the course of their activities.
The politicians present encouraged the PPRC to engage the leadership of their parties, before invoking the powers conferred on them in the New Act, in any case of perceived transgression by any of the parties, in the spirit of ‘mutual cooperation and goodwill’.
It could be recalled that the Parliament of Sierra Leone on the 24th November 2022 passed into law the “Political Parties Regulation Commission Act, 2022”.
The bill seeks to provide for the continuation of the Political Parties Registration Commission as the Political Parties Regulation Commission.
