The Sierra Leone Premier League in Focus

The Review

Kallon miss chance to go top

Just as most people feared, FC Kallon missed the chance over the weekend to go top of the league. They drew blanks with Old Edwardians in what was a thrilling encounter right to the end.

As disappointing as FC Kallon were, Edwards were celebrating, because they knew they’d put in one hell of a performance to get this result. For Edwards this is seven points out of nine now since the start of the second half of the season.  They are 10th in the table and climbing.

FC Kallon have 30 points, siting just a point behind leaders Lions in the table.

Ports win a point from Tigers

Much hasn’t changed but Ports are happy to take a point. This is the first point they have won since the start of the second half of the league. How they do going forward will be very important. They are 3rd in the table, seven points behind the league leaders. They will take solace in that.

Tigers know they need a win. They still sit 7th in the table. But they won’t be disappointed with a point either. For a new comer, they are used to winning big games like this but they can always accept a draw. Even though they are 7th, the point margin between them and third place Ports is just four.

RSLAF get campaign on track

A tenth minute goal was just enough to settle the score between two relegation favourites; RSLAF v Anti-Drugs. RSLAF is back; perhaps this is the win that will finally get their season on track. They have worked so hard to get here.

In winning, RSLAF condemned Bo Rangers to their usual spot; bottom of the table. They have thirteen points and they are in 12th spot with a game in hand. No other team in the relegation zone has that much advantage.

Anti-Drugs should watch out. They are dancing on the edge. If they get sucked in to those last two spots, they might not come out. At the moment they are just above RSLAF on goal differences.

The Preview

On Wednesday, Central Parade will take on Freetown City Council. And Parade are taking this game home. Home for Parade is Circular Road, where the Parade Ground is located. Perhaps there is a reason for that, but they need this.

Parade haven’t won a game since the start of the second leg. Since then they have slipped to 6th, allowing Mighty Blackpool, Ports Authority and Kamboi Eagles to overtake them. They had a big meeting last week where players, coaches and management had a frank discussion about themselves. They will be fresh on Wednesday.

FCFC? No one knows what they want. What we all know is that one day they might surprise us and the other day they might disappoint. Surprisingly, they have lost six out of the fifteen games they have played but are still 8th in the table. They are not top, they are not bottom, they are just there.

This is a club that is living on the edge and they are enjoying just doing so. So we expect an exciting game. Parade will play with a lot of intensity; it will all depend on how FCFC decide to cope.

East End Tigers v Diamond Stars

Very few people know why Tigers are no longer playing their matches in Lungi. But that doesn’t really matter, what matters is how they cope with Diamond Stars in Freetown. The last two games Diamond Stars played in the capital they won four points; three against Parade and one against Blackpool. Will Tigers give them anything?

Diamond Stars will have to deal with the loss of their goalkeeper. Why they are selling him in the middle of the season is baffling. There are so many questions surrounding his future and these questions have come at the wrong time. This whole business might just affect the harmony the squad has been building for months now.

Despite this, the Diamond Stars have to pay attention to football. The draw against leaders Lions was a great result. It shows they have the pedigree to challenge the very best in the league. It’s too early or perhaps late to talk about a title push by this team. But who knows, if they keep winning then we will see. But first things first: f they treat the Lions, can they treat the Tigers?
