Sierra Leone president turns sod for artificial turf project

By Mohamed Jaward Nyallay

President Julius Maada Bio has done the symbolic turning of the sod for the installation of the Diamond Blade artificial turf at the Kenema City playing field.

In a ceremony organized by the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), President Bio said his government was supporting football in the country because it’s part of their human capital development agenda.

Bio urged the people of Kenema to take care of the project.

The turf costs US$960, 000 and its part of FIFA’s support for the development of infrastructure in the country. The project has stalled for months.

On February 1st, Isha Johansen promised that the project would start in two weeks, after a long delay.

The launch of the project comes two weeks late, after her promise.

At launching ceremony on Friday, she said: “Good things come to those who wait,” adding:

“Some challenges are meant to happen in order to bring about closer ties and better understanding.”

The Minister of Sports, Ibrahim Nyelenkeh, said the installation of the pitch would raise the profile of football in the district.

The installation process is expected to last for three months.

“SLFA will be back in the last week of May, this year, to officially hand over the state-of-the-art artificial turf pitch to the people of Kenema,” said Chris Kamara, General Secretary of the FA.
