The newly elected Council chairman has promised to build a clock tower at Gobaru Junction on the approach to Pujehun town and provide street lights for the township itself and surrounding communities.
Addressing the inaugural meeting of the recently-elected council and the people of the district on Thursday, 14th September 2023, at Bumpeh Community Barray, Foday K Rogers said he intends to keep his pre-election promise of supporting the development of football in the southern district.
Chairman Rogers said he takes his council’s responsibility to manage the affairs of the district seriously and called on the people to work with the council for a better Pujehun by promoting peace and harmony throughout the district.
Honourable Shiaka Musa Sama who was recently appointed to serve in the district council following the review of the local government act urged the council which is entirely dominated by the ruling SLPP to work diligently towards fulfilling their mandates, stressing the importance of accountability, transparency, and a sense of collective responsibility as “you selflessly serve our people”. He said: “Let's not come here for a purpose and forget that objective because if nobody holds us accountable here then Allah will”.
Another MP from the district Mariama Konyia Zombo encouraged women to take the lead in development, especially in agriculture while acknowledging strides made by President Bio in education and women's empowerment.
The Parliamentary community that hosted the meeting called on Paramount Chiefs in the district to “take the lead in establishing farms in all chiefdoms as it is the goal of President Bio's Feed Salone initiative. Agriculture is very important because food comes first. Without food, there will be no me, no you, no SLPP, no president Bio.
I'm going to make sure that I fully support the council to succeed in its development endeavors. All funds that I acquire within these five years will be directed towards bolstering the council's activities”.
The councilors discussed various methods to ensure that the council’s development plan was executed with requisite monitoring and evaluation procedures to track progress. The council noted that the success of the plan to develop Pujehun depended on the council's ability to work with the community to mobilize resources and determine their roles and responsibilities in the development agenda.
The council recently received NLe 1,668,000 representing its first quarter allocation from the central government.
