The Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone, SWASAL unveiled nominees for this year's Sports Awards categories on Wednesday 5th November. SLAJ president Farjah Barrie said the judges decided on the shortlist after receiving nominations from journalists and members of the public over a period of one month.
Barrie said the judges were under no pressure from his executive "because they are credible people and we trust them". He announced that the sport betting company, Mercury International is their main sponsor and acknowledged that Mercury has been with SWASAL for a long time. The SWASAL president, ‘’I appreciate their support to the association during my tenure and the good relationship will continue’’.
In his response, the chairman of the Mercury Charity Foundation Samir Hassaniyeh commended the efforts of the executive of SWASAL for being transparent since the sponsorship began. Hassaniyeh said ‘’the good relationship will continue and we will always be ready to sponsor SWASAL’’.
He said sports journalism has created a big impact in the development of sports in the country in Sierra Leone.
