The turf expert in the World Football Governing Body, FIFA Dr. Stephen W. Baker on Tuesday 1st October inspected the pitches of the main bowl of the national stadium and the practice grounds outside "to determine which type of artificial turf was suitable for Sierra Leone.
Baker told journalists that the contractors will use the "existing drainage system on the pitch but extra drainages will be done under the pitch including a gravel drainage layer to help the water to get away". He said they will "build up a solid base profile, as that stage of the construction work is to level the surface of the pitch to lay the turf on top and get a perfect condition for the players"
He said at present they are constructing a new stadium in Brazil for the World Cup after successfully constructing the South African national stadium for the last World Cup.
Baker said he will recommend to FIFA that the job be fast-tracked
A Vice President of the SLFA Brima Mazola Kamara told journalists that the pitch reconstruction would be the fourth FIFA goal project in Sierra Leone after the construction of the Kingtom Academy and laying of artificial turfs in Makeni and Kono respectively.
