Ahead of the country’s General Elections slated for 24th June this year and its 62nd independence anniversary, the Interim United Nations Resident Coordinator to Sierra Leone Nadia Rasheed has commended the peaceful nature of the country since it last peace talks after the brutal civil war.
“As we celebrate this special anniversary, we commend the progress made by Sierra Leone in consolidating peace and democracy. Sierra Leone is one of a few countries that once hosted UN Peacekeeping operations, but the country now proudly deploys its peacekeepers to other countries that need international support,” she said in a press statement.
She said the UN continues to enjoy a strong partnership with the people of Sierra Leone based on shared values and common interests.
She noted that as a country team, they work together with the Government and development partners to deliver sustainable development interventions for people, prosperity, planet, partnership and peace.
She said the UN has accompanied Sierra Leone during all post-war elections that were considered credible by international observers, “and the upcoming elections will be the second since the end of the civil war to be held without the presence of a UN peace-keeping or political mission.”
However, she said that national institutions, political actors and all Sierra Leoneans have a great responsibility to ensure that the country remains peaceful and stable, and continues to grow and prosper for the benefit of all.
She reiterated the commitment of the global peace body to supporting the people of Sierra Leone and national institutions in sustaining the important gains the country has made to ensure peace and democracy.
Tomorrow marks 62 years since the country gained independence from Britain in 1961.
