University of Sierra Leone worker in passport scam

Police have confirmed the arrest of an IT worker for the University of Sierra Leone, Lekan Ogundapo. It followed the discovery inside his office drawer at Fourah Bay College of 23 Sierra Leonean passports bearing apparently foreign names.

The man, who is Nigeria, is also being investigated for obtaining money by false pretence, according to Assistant Superintendent of Police Thaimu Balie Sesay of the East end Police station.

ASP Sesay said Ogundapo was taken to the police station at the airport town of Lungi sometime this week by one of four people who had complained him and alleged visa fraud.

He said the allegations were that he obtained money in the range of US$ 6,000 from people on the pretext he would arrange for them to secure a United States visa.

The East End Police boss however said that Ogundapo had been released on bail "on medical grounds to a responsible Sierra Leonean citizen ". However, a source at the university told Politico on condition of anonymity that they were not sure about the whereabouts of Ogundapo and that the police had failed to give them any detail.

The University has warned the public against dealing with the alleged fraudster on its behalf.
