The tough task for Leone Stars at AfCON 22

By Amjata Bayoh

Almost 26 years since Sierra Leone’s male National football team participated in the Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON), the dream of this football-crazy nation finally became a reality after the Leone Stars beat Benin by a lone goal in Conakry back in June 2021.

POEM: WHO MUST WE BE?

We can become what we say,

When believe the truth of what we say,

And practice what we say with discipline.

Let us therefore be careful

To say, believe and practice

Only that which edifies all.

Sierra Leoneans always were,

Still are,

Must always be,

And will hopefully always remain ,

Sincere and sober,

Industrious with integrity,

Enthusiastic and empathetic,

POEM: THE LAST GOODBYE

As sunlight wanes from the sky,

I see thick black flames billow from across the street.

While I struggle for air,

I trample upon my fallen brothers

Whom I barely recognize.

I see them covered in ruins,

with bodies as though they died naked

And at a place similar to an inferno;

Roasting everything away from them,

Their survival

Their dreams

Their prospects;

Everything.

Indeed, I’ve seen many sorrows

POEM: WEIGH YOUR WORDS

        Simple words may wound or soothen,

        Much depending on their use;

        They estrange as well as sadden

        When their use becomes abuse.

        Air may be compared to verbiage

        Both in quality and mass;

        Furious air will scatter foliage

        Thoughtless words good friends disperse.

        Temperate words tend to ennoble,

        Comfort, quicken and console.

        When like viands on the table
