Blood samples for Ebola in Kono

The Lassa fever control unit in Kenema was recently in Kono district to collect blood samples from 15 people believed to have conveyed and buried the corpse of 14-year-old Sahr Lafalaywho allegedly died of Ebola.

MPs set to probe NGOs

Parliament has set up an eight-man committee to investigate nongovernmental and civil society organizations, NGOs/CSOs on monies provided to them by donors with a view to find out how and whether such funds are expended judiciously.

The MPs first announced their intention last month and on Tuesday 25, March 2014 the special select committee unveiled in one of the sittings and it would be headed by the chief whip, Claude Kamanda.

Setbacks in dedollarization

Governor of the Central Bank of Sierra Leone has said that reactions to a recent economic measure have slowed down the implementing of the country’s dedollarization policy, meant to give preference to the leones over other foreign currencies.

Sheku Sambadeen Sesay on Tuesday told the country’s parliament that foreign accounts holders in the country had complained about bottlenecks in the withdrawal of foreign notes at commercial banks.

35 health aides graduate in Kono

Thirty-five Maternal Child Health Aides, MCH-Aides, have received their certificates after completing a 3-year training at the training centre in Koidu town, Kono district.

While handing over the certificates the centre coordinator, Sister Hellen Matturie, expressed gratitude to UNICEF, the district and city councils and the health ministry for their timely support in training and graduating the second batch of students.

BRAC on girls’ education in Kono

An international non-governmental microfinance organisation, BRAC, has launched its first girl primary school in the Koeyor community in Koidu to support early girl-child education in the district.

NaCSA unveils Kailahun project

National Commission for Social Action,NaCSA, has launched one of several newly constructed feeder roads and grain stores for communities in the Upper Bambara and Luawa chiefdoms in the Kailahun District.

In a press release issued by the commission the deputy commissioner, Isatu Kamara, said the project was geared towards increasing the economic productivity of the people in the area by ensuring easy access to market areas through better road networks and storage and preservation facilities.
