Human rights defenders join fight corruption in SIerra Leone

In order to minimize the threats it poses to society, the Human Rights Defenders Network –Sierra Leone in Partnership with Restitution Impact Limited has vowed to fight against corruption using a human rights-based approach.

The Human Rights Group made the commitment during a one-day training of over 40 Civil Society Organization (CSO) at the Methodist Church Hall, King Harman Road in Freetown on the 30th of August, 2023.

Sierra Leonean broadcasters urged to do community service

Media Lecturer, Isaac Massaquoi (Ph.D.) has urged broadcast journalists to devote ten (10) hours every week to programmes supporting community development.

Dr. Massaquoi was reminding journalists of a provision in the Independent Media Commission (IMC) code of ethics that compels radio and television operators to undertake such a commitment.

Citizens want rabies jab decentralized

With stray dogs in almost every corner of the city, Citizens have called on the government to make the rabies vaccine for humans accessible and affordable to all Sierra Leoneans.

Speaking with Politico on the 31st August 2023, Mabinty Sankoh said she believes there is an increase in dog bites in the country. She explained that she was bitten by a street dog late in the evening and had to visit the hospital where she was told that she cannot get access to the vaccine unless she visits a certain place at Goderich.     

Sierra Leone Army warns against military coup

The Director of Public Relations and Information at the Ministry of Defence Lieutenant- Colonel Issa Bangura has warned members of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) to stay off coups.

Colonel Bangura also reminded army personnel that their constitutional mandate is protecting territorial boundaries and defending the constitution of the country.

Sierra Leone to open embassy in Israel

The Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah has confirmed that President Julius Maada Bio has given directives for opening of an Embassy in the state of Israel.

Chernor Bah made this statement during the Tuesday weekly press briefing by his ministry held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ conference room on 29th August this year.

Over 60 journalists trained on health emergencies

In order to mitigate the outbreak and spread of diseases that endanger the health of the people, over 60 journalists have been trained to provide timely and accurate information regarding public health emergencies.

The training which was facilitated by Politico and supported by Internews through the Stop Spillover project, working to address the spillover of Zoonotic diseases in Sierra Leone commenced on the 28th of August, 2023 at the Council of Churches in Sierra Leone (CCSL) Conference hall in Freetown.
